I studied Product Design at GSA and then went on to do a degree in 3D Design at Northumbria University. The first piece of furniture that I designed and sold was the original prototype of my Monosloth armchair, and it’s fair to say I’ve been obsessed with chairs since!
I started my initial design practice Worhaus around 2007 which created ranges of pieces of furniture suitable for both the domestic and commercial market. As the business grew I expanded into custom designed and fitted work to provide specific solutions for individual spaces. Focusing on a timeless aspect of design and desire for my work to fit a wide range of environments, simplicity within the shapes used but with a playful edge has added character to the pieces. My influences range through from Neoclassical, Brutalism, Art Deco, Memphis right up to the current day. During my studies I did a placement with the pioneering furniture maker Fred Baier, which had a profound impact on my practice.
I’ve always collected interesting pieces over the years but around 2020 my collection evolved in a such a way that I realised it deserved its own platform. And out of this Forhaus was born. The collection is eclectic and varied, including pieces from periods back to the early 19th century, right up to the present day. I’m not precious about who designed or made the pieces, if they’re good they’re good! I also work alongside many other talented makers, and have collaborated with people like Mirrl, The Art Of Upholstery and Laura Lightbody Ceramics to reimagine and reinvigorate some of the secondhand pieces.
With my work the end result is always key, leading to a wide range of potential materials used. Whether it’s my Worhaus custom build work or Forhaus pieces I always seek to create and collect work that has a unique personality.
